The most common way to revise is also one of the least effective: read the manual, highlight it, re-read the highlights. It feels like mastery and produces mediocre results. The problem isn't effort, it's the mechanism.
Why re-reading feels like knowing
Re-reading a text makes it familiar. The brain confuses that fluency with knowledge: "I recognise this paragraph, so I must know it." This is the illusion of fluency β a comfortable feeling with none of the substance behind it.
The exam doesn't ask you to recognise anything. It asks you to retrieve an answer with nothing in front of you. Those are two different skills, and only the second one is trained by testing yourself.
Worth remembering: if you haven't got anything wrong while revising, you haven't tested yourself, you've re-read.
Retrieval practice: testing before you're ready
The idea is counter-intuitive: try to answer before you've properly learnt the material. Getting it wrong isn't a sign the session failed, it's what makes the session work. A fact you searched for, missed, then found again sticks far better than one you read three times. Ebbinghaus mapped the forgetting curve over a century ago; the benefit of testing itself β the testing effect β was measured much later, notably by Roediger and Karpicke's studies comparing re-reading against active recall.
Applied to the PPL syllabus:
- Close the book after a section and write down what you remember, from memory alone.
- Attempt a subject's practice questions before you've fully revised it: the ones you get wrong tell you exactly what to read next.
- Explain a topic out loud, as if teaching another student. Wherever you stumble is exactly where the gap is.
Spaced repetition: revising at the right moment
Forgetting is fast and predictable. Spaced repetition means reviewing a fact just before you'd forget it: after a day, then three days, then a week, then a month. Each time you recall it successfully, the interval stretches further.

Two practical consequences:
- Twenty minutes a day beats three hours on a Sunday. For the same total time invested, spacing produces noticeably better retention.
- What's already solid doesn't need frequent review. Attention naturally shifts to whatever keeps slipping β which is exactly what spaced-repetition flashcards automate for you.
This pays off most on anything that's pure memorisation: regulatory values, transponder codes, METAR abbreviations, document validity periods.
What needs a different approach
Three parts of the syllabus aren't about memorisation and need different treatment:
Calculations (navigation, mass and balance, performance). These become automatic through repeating the process, not through understanding alone. Redo the same type of calculation until it takes no conscious effort β the time you save there is what gets you through the exam.
Reasoning (meteorology, principles of flight). Here, understanding the mechanism makes memorising unnecessary. If you know why an altimeter overreads altitude in cold air, you no longer need to memorise the rule.
Procedures (radio, emergencies). These are trained in context, out loud, and get reinforced by actual flying. Reading a phraseology doesn't install it; saying it does.
Mock exams: earlier than you think
Waiting to feel "ready" before sitting a full mock exam is a timing mistake. The first mock isn't there to confirm a level, it's there to expose the shape of the problem: time management, fatigue near the end of the paper, and the subjects where you're quietly losing marks.
Sit one early, even if the score is poor, then one a week as your exam date approaches. What matters is reviewing every wrong answer and identifying what kind of mistake it was: a knowledge gap, careless reading, or running out of time. Three different problems, three different fixes.
A plan that holds up
A revision schedule that works looks like this, counted back from your exam date:
- Every day, 15β20 minutes of flashcards on anything purely memory-based.
- Three to four times a week, a focused session on one subject: read a section, then answer questions on it immediately.
- Every week, a targeted review of everything you got wrong in the last seven days.
- From about three weeks out, one full, timed mock exam per week until test day.
This isn't more work. It's the same time, spent differently β tested instead of re-read.
